The Soot Shield is a light, black, plexi-glass dust containing SHIELD! It fits perfectly over the opening of every standard fireplace. Pop-out, telescopic legs hold it firmly in place. Heavy rubber gasketing around the back ridge perimeter creates an airtight seal between the soot shield and the face of the fireplace. A vacuum port at the bottom of the Soot Shield makes it possible to run the powerful vacuum while the chimney is being cleaned. This combination of an airtight physical seal around the fire place, and a vacuum creating a continuous negative pressure inside the enclosed fireplace, makes it impossible for any soot to escape during the sweeping process. Before we designed and manufactured the Soot Shield, the best way to keep soot inside the chimney during the sweeping process, was to seal the fireplace opening by taping up sheet plastic. But, for the Sweep, taping up the face of fireplace, is a tedious job—which is not always effective. It might take 20 minutes just to tape the fireplace correctly to create an effective seal. Even then, the soot might still escape, or the tape which holds up the plastic might pull up paint when it is removed.
